Just out of interest, I came upon a similar problem with a program I wrote way, way back in CPM days. (IIRC it was a BASIC varient on an HP125). The "printer" driver automatically changed 0x09 (tab) to 4 spaces. This was fine for printing, but you had to use the print statement for file saves also So binary saves got corrupted. It took a while to find, figure out, and work around.
