I've done a lot of bootloaders, but I never once even considered leaving out the checksum. Even if you think the communications channel is fine, what if power gets interrupted in the middle of a upload, the line gets disconnected, the user kills the program, or any of a number of sufficiently possible things that could cause a bad uploaded image? It seems to me that reloading the previous working version would be one of the first things you do to verify the hardware didn't break. Another big "duh" for waiting 3 days to do that!
