Perhaps it would be if they were starting with nothing. However, MPLAB already exists with many nice features. It does pretty much everything I want it to. I can think of some incremental features to add, but these would be trivial compared to rewriting everything from scratch, no matter how much open code they get to use in the process. All MPLAB X means to me is loss of ICE-2000 and ICE-4000 support. You say one advantage is that it will run on MAC and Linux, but I don't care. I'm running Windows, like the vast majority of PIC developers.
