That doesn't make sense.  500V into 1Mohm is only 250mW.  If it went bang
with a blue flash there was something else going on, probably bad insulatio=
n
or dirt in the wrong place.  This wouldn't be the fault of 1Mohm versus
10Mohm input impedence.
