Uphill, both ways, in the snow.
When we were lads we used to scrape the paint off OC70's, when we
could get them. We had to paint them black again before Dad came home
or there was real trouble. On bad weeks we had to make do with
unmarked longer bodied but similar looking painted glass transistors
that we bought from a Dutchman who bought them in Holland before
emigrating. I think I may still have some.

Hacking the top off a 6CW4 proved that it didn't have optical
capabilities, although they would make a very small amount of light
for a very short time when powered up after opening.

807's make a nice purple light - but it takes 800+ Volt and some tens
of Watts to produce and I think you may only get about 10 mcd out -
the youngsters don't know how well off they are with their 30+ candela
LEDs.
