You might want to look at the cubatron projects from 3waylabs. http://www.3waylabs.com/projects/cubatron/ http://www.3waylabs.com/projects/brc/ They've done about that many LEDs, animated at 50 frames/sec, with a =20 linux box as the top level controller. There are some technical =20 details, but it's not in any sense "published" in the details. It seems that Mark's strategy is to make each "voxel" an independently =20 addressable RGB LED, after which it's just a matter of communications =20 protocol, wiring, and software...
