Plenty of "bike professional" who it seems don't have a clue. WD40 is designed as a water dispersant, not a lube. It does just barely work as a lube, as there is a very small amount of very light oil contained in the carrier (which evaporates), but it's worse than pretty much anything else you might choose to use. The gaps in a chain aren't that tiny or difficult for thicker liquid lubes to penetrate. I suppose anything will do if you don't really care (water is actually a pretty decent lube and cheaper than WD40), but why not make your bike work a bit better even if you don't ride it much or often?
