On this one intended application, I'll most probably have several =20 channels of non-standard serial data, hence the need to bit-bang. The =20 pennies aren't really a concern on this one, but I'd like to avoid =20 having several peripheral chips doing the comms and then feeding to =20 one bigger processor.
