I've used the Maxim MAX710 for years and it's a nice part. So far it's always been available, and the price is OK, about $5 in small quantities. But I'm always open for something better. What I need is a regulator that gives me 5 volts out for 4 to 6 volts in. Output current less than 300 mA. When it's off, output needs to be off and input drain no more than a few tens of microamps. The MAX710 has a boost regulator followed by a linear low dropout regulator. For my purposes it has been more efficient and no more expensive than a SEPIC converter when you consider the extra inductor or clever transformer plus extra capacitor. I'm open for two-chip ideas, too. If anyone has found a good solution, "I'm all ears". Thanks.
