The "labels", which are approximately equivalent to mailboxes, make it reasonably easy to separate what from chaff. You can cause incoming emails to skip the inbox and have labels added as desired. You can click on "All Mail" to see what's new and then use searches like label: ItsRubbish or multiple labels eg label: unread label:PICLIST to select desired subsets.
