I must admit to using cardboard myself - for carby & thermostat cover gaskets etc, I never tried it for head gasket use and can remember trying to think of something I could use for a blown (exhaust) manifold gasket. (I think I ended up re-using the old one plus exhaust cement re-enforced with steel wool or a "brillo pad" dishwash scourer).
