The most extreme version of this that I came across was a colleague who
decided that an earth is an earth, connected a random length of wire to
the grounding post on the front of the scope, with a clip lead on the
other end going to a handy random earth point on the system he was
attempting to repair, and then wondered why he couldn't trigger on the
20MHz 5V TTL waveform he was attempting to look at, or at best he got a
diagonal line across the screen.=20
