I gathered that people were trying to steer me to different toolsets and hardware because they were cool or efficient, but didn't pick up on the fact that they were doing so because either the old PIC, old ICD2, or old dev board was no longer quite as useful. However, I'm trying not to read too much into your statement either. "May not be the best choice" is certainly not the same as "don't use stuff that old".
