The schools are teaching it a lot less than they used to. When I was =20 in school in the 60s and 70s they taught metric because (and as if) it =20 was assumed we would convert "real soon now." Not any more; you tend =20 to use metric in the sciences, but no wholesale conversion effort. Of course, my kids also didn't learn about converting quarts to pecks =20 and bushels... Electronics is an interesting combination. 0.1 inch pitch is common, =20 but so is .6mm and .5mm...
