RS controls *where* to write (or read), not if one writes or not.

Again, it was the *RW* line I was specificaly asking about.
Does RA1/RW has a pulldown to GND ?
Are you going to read from the LCD at all ?
If not, just pull/tie it low and save a PIC I/O-pin...
