So get two small 12V batteries and put them in series.  After a little hot
glue or epoxy, it will be just like a real 24V battery.  Since you're only
building a few, this shouldn't be a big deal.

Again, since some manual intervention is apparenly OK, put a switch in ther=
e
to configure between charging (parallel) and operating (series) modes.
