If price isn't a huge concern, you could try an IR laser

have the LM4 for $15. I've dealt with Oatley a few times and find
them good to deal with. You might find a better deal where you are

If you don't want it visible, a red laser (eg ex-pointer, very cheap)
at a low duty cycle might just be OK
