As far as old computers go, nothing beats Debian Linux in my opinion. Just get the netinstall ISO and you should be good to go. It installs fast, boots fast, and runs fast. When you install it, you get nothing but a shell and the bare minimum. I recommend upgrading to the Testing version though, as Stable tends to be a bit old (yet very stable).
