I'd be interested in hearing anyone's experiences with HID lamps - operating - dimming. - making controllers. Related stuff below. ________________ I'm looking at what is involved in operating & controlling HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamps. Nasty brutes. My application is ultra low volume so a commercial controller will probably suffice. (I'm looking at making small "1 sun" light sources, but LEDs look more attractive overall. Brightness control is desirable. Conditions: Typically may be 5 kV strike, 25 kV warm restrike, 80 Volt operate, 20V run with ramp up over about 2 minutes from striking. 100+ lumen / Watt (exceeded only by the best LEDs so far). 2000 - 3000 - 20000 - ... hours longevity (depends on brand, spec, source of claim). Capital cost: Lower lumen/$ than LEDs. Lifetime cost - give LEDs a run for their money.
