While it is more complex and seems a little "much" for a simple problem, I highly recommend taking the plunge, since once you'd got things set up everything email related becomes so much easier. For me it the "syncing", the fact that when I send an email on the road, at work, or at home, I know that message will be place in the same "Sent" folder. I know when I copy a message to a Saved folder, it'll be in that same spot when I get home. As for me, I have a Ubuntu machine running at home as my server (it does a bunch of other stuff). At home I access it directly. Away from home I run an SSH tunnel to ensure everything is secure (for more then just IMAP access). I use dovecot for the IMAP sever and getmail for the process that fetches my email from various accounts. I just wish there were a way to integrate contact and calender handling using the same system, but I digress.
