If you're building a 30w guitar amp, I'm in full agreement.  I'm partial
to the 12AX7 for the preamp, however.  :-)

You can always use DSP to synthesize effects and use the 12AX7 valve
preamp and 6V6 PA stages as is done in the new Super Champ amp.
