That is a really outdated chip.  Several PICs do more, cost less, and come
in the same footprint.  Some examples off the top of my head are 16F88,
16F648A.

That's probably OK.  On that class of PICs the LF is usually a superset of
the F parts.  The LF have a lower minimum operating voltage.  For some PICs,
the LF can't do a few things the F part can, but that is usually when the
PIC has some sort of power supply or regulator built in.  Check the
datasheet to verify the LF is really a superset of the F.
