I wasn't aware of PICs having this feature.  I was recently surprised
to see that Atmel has this in their ATtiny43U MCU.  It can operate
down to 0.7V with the right additional components.

Perhaps look into how people do the fancy Christmas light displays.
One strategy I've seen is to use RS485 to communicate between nodes.
