You said "Like ...2803" - which is 'open collector - effectively it's an array of darlingtom transistors plus diodes. Also, in many applications you only want 'open collector' drive - including some of those that yoi\u mentioned. ie 8 transistors will do what you want in some cases and 16 may not :-). An IC takes 2 pins / channel. A transistor takes 3. Soldering TO92's is not hard, cost is low and education may happen. Space required is about the same as for a ULN2803 (or can be). TO92 transistors cost a few cents in the right place in modest volume. I tend to y\use BC337/BC327 at about 500 mA and with 300+ beta (current gain) versions available.
