I attached a > picture. You can do that with discrete transistors connected as emitter followers. Vin to base, Vout from emitter, V+ to collector. Size using smd is probably about the same as using an IC. Diodes may or may not be needed depending on application. An advantage of using discrete transistors is that if wanted you can "distribute them where needed physically - you just need to run supply there rather than taking Vin and Vout to the IC.
