I never got into the discussion of whether the FET is or is not on in your
cirucuit since I haven't looked at it closely enough.

Right.  You seem to be forgetting the "if" in the statement above.

Yes, in theory.  See my other post about that though.  You'd have to get a
very impressive FET to get down to 600mV drop.
