I've done some work for a network-enabled sprinkler system using a
PIC18 and a SitePlayer for the network interface (though in retrospect
I should've just spun up my own network stack using a PIC18F69J60 or
even a PIC32). It keeps time and can control up to 12 valves, each
with two interval timers (every day, every other day, every third day,
or any combination of M-F, for X minutes). You can look here
