A local company, Beacon Power (http://www.beaconpower.com) is using
flywheels for short term power grid storage and peaking.  Individual units
are 100KWh.  They have or are building plants with a bunch of these to
rapidly respond essentially instantly to short term power demand
fluctuations.  Large power plants take minutes to hours to respond to demand
changes.
