If you DID decide to roll your own you have enough "space" to do so,
but the results may be less than intuitive.
Using A-Z = 26 characters you  get 26 x 26 =676 combinations.
676/96 = 7 decades at E96 resolution.

Extending that to A-Z, 0-9 you get 36 * 36 = 1296
1296/96 = 13+ decades.

The latter is risky with I / 1, 0 / O etc confusion possible.
Even I / L may cause issues.

Using A-Z with GEe I missed and one other = 24 x 24 = 576
576/96 = 6 decades
Possibly enough depending on application.

You could use A-Z, 0-9 less I, 0 and say 2 more
= 32 x 32= 10+ decades at E96.

Hard on the brain though :-)
