It would be easier to add IR dongle or 433MHz OOK/ASK (315or 915 in 
USA?) dongle. Simpler software too. The ASK/OOK dongle could even 
operate of headphone jack. On nearly any phone. 4KHz clock on one audio 
channel as power and 2.4kHz manchester data on other audio channel.

The RF ASK/OOK can use about 1mW (lower power than Bluetooth) and can be 
90% efficient and TX and RX parts are under $1 each end. The case and 
connector maybe cost more than the ASK TX which is a SAW resonator, 1 
transistor, about 4 capacitors, 1 resistor and PCB foil filter/aerial.

1200bps at better range than Bluetooth too! Current ASK receiver chips 
only need a single crystal and no external IF filter. The two coils and 
aerial can be printed PCB track.  Built in AGC and Data slicer. Over 
88dB dynamic range. You simply manchester encode the raw serial data.
