  Personally I think the 40 pin DIP package is very klunky and a pain to use.
  I would get a handful of 18F2620 for general hobby use.  These have 28 pins
  with the DIP package .3" wide, but are otherwise the same part as the
  18F4620.

I'd suggest PIC18F4458, 12 bit A-D, 48 MHz....
