Since the OP specified "Program memory", and has linked to an app-note explaining the details of extending program memory, I assumed he wanted more program memory. I might be wrong... If continued development of an application has caused the code to exceed the on-board memory limits, then it's entirely possible that adding external memory (and probably a larger PIC for the extra pins) would be cheaper and/or quicker than porting the code to a different architecture and possibly having to buy all new development tools.
