I think you may need a delay in between initialisation commands, or a busy 
check, to wait for the LCD to process the command. Also it wouldn't hurt to 
try a longer strobe on the enable pin. What model is the LCD? Are you 
getting anything at all on the screen? (e.g does it flicker or similar) Did 
you put a pot or resistor in for the contrast?
