No. The useful range of Vlcd is very small and very close to ground. If you don't have a pot, find a resistor to attach from the Vlcd pin to ground. Somewhere in the range of 330 ohms to 2.2 K. For most generic displays that should get you somewhere within the operating range(the Vlcd will naturally pull up so you can take advantage of that).
