Because I use lots of different micro-controller families (PIC16, PIC18,
dsPIC, PIC32, AVR, 8051, etc.) and want to be able re-use my code with
minimal changes.

Assembly is nice sometimes, but LCD modules are slow and in most cases
there is little gain with the extra optimization, and big potential
losses due to code not being re-usable.
