Subject: Amazement at what feats of historical information archiving are being achieved by Google. I Gargoyled for "10th American Mountain Division" as one does. I wanted to check the background to a quote by Field Marshall "Smiling Albert" Kesselring in his memorable memoirs. There were a number of G' hits - far less than on most searches. BUT there was this one: http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2194&dat=19450424&id=m_0uAAAAIBAJ&sjid=79sFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3285,3899213 Page 19 The Evening Citizen. Ottawa. Wednesday April 25th 1945. A small paragraph in a crookedly scanned Canadian newspaper page from 65 years ago. It's just below the central photo in the snippet headed "Disorganized foe being chased out of Northern Italy" Context and accuracy of the snippet are irrelevant - it's the fact that Google in their relentless drive to own. er, store all the world's data, have got so far along the track in not only archiving historical material like this but of making it text searchable. But, not only was this page os somewhat memorable news saved, but also every other page of the paper. It doesn't seem to all be equally searchable - so maybe the text capture was done manually? !
