A micro does not need a current-limiting resistor in its power rail.

I challenge you to find a schematic with an example

It's possible to run a micro with no external components at all. And
they aren't that delicate. They will tolerate all manner of abuse, more
so than many other chips. However, they do have weak spots like
the analogue inputs

Then something else went wrong. Perhaps a pin or pins was trying
to sink or source current above spec, blew, and took the chip along
for the ride. Or Vcc was disconnected with power from elsewhere
able to leak into the chip through a port
