Yes, I think it would work well and be very cool! There is a Simile-Timeline
Gadget that can be directly added inside Google Docs but, I've not tried it
yet.

I have used OpenOffice Calc with a custom function I wrote to generate JSON
data for my timelines.
Here's a sample spreadsheet I wrote to demonstrate the function:

For security Calc by default won't allow custom functions to run. This
spreadsheet has instructions and tips for working with custom functions in
OOCalc:
