The RepRap (open source 3d printer) folks have put (some sort of)  
motion controller into Arduino-sized things.  I'm not much involved  
and don't know the details, but they're probably worth looking at,  
since I think they built their hardware in a nicely modular fashion  
(motion controller separate from drivers, etc.)
