Not just in the long run.  Having to explain what you're doing to that
imagined person looking over your shoulder forces a certain clarity that in
turn causes you to catch mistakes before you make them.

Good comments are not just afterthoughts.  Writing good comments as you go
along causes you to write better code, not counting the value of the
comments themselves.
