Programmers are probably not more stupid than the group here, on average -- and there's a reason for everything :) If you compare in detail the apps you used to run from 40MB disks with the apps today, you probably notice some important differences. Some of them are related to the increase in code size. Many of these are related to a distinctive increase in user-friendliness. The amount of programming that goes into a good UI is tremendous; it usually outweighs the actual function by magnitudes (unless you consider the UI part of the function, of course -- which has merit).
