The camera he showed in the news clip is just a little point-and-click, so you might not be too bothered. Then there'd be some sort of altimeter, perhaps just a simple pressure gauge, something to trigger the camera, a locator signal and a parachute deployment system. Maybe he doesn't DIY and gets someone to build them for 500.
