Nobody's mentioned 'help' yet. That lists the available commands, and then you can type something like 'help for' to drill down into specific command details. The 'for' comments are quite verbose IIRC (I'm not on a Windows box at the moment so cannot verify this, but I'm pretty certain). I'm also pretty certain the 'help' command has been around for a fair while too - I remember using it in DOS 5, 6 and 6.22. But I agree - IMHO, MS command interfaces have never been terribly good compared to other alternatives, especially the plethora of available ones in the *nix world.
