> ... I was born in Saskatchewan. It is just about as far from > an ocean as anyplace on earth. I have seen snow in Saskatchewan > in every month except July. Winter in Saskatchewan is how the > arctic was depicted in old movies. THE furthest city from the ocean is Urumqi (Ur um chee in local Uyghur dialect)(Oo-roo-moo-chee i Han Chinese) in northwest China. Just below Russian border and on old Silk Road. Slightly colder on average in Winter than Sakatchewan and noticeably warmer in summer according to the marvellous Gaisma (see below) In October 2008 I visited a friend who lives there. "Pretty crisp" even then with 5C monthly average. In winter they break the ice off the local swimming pool near where I stayed so that people can do laps. I'd like to see it in Winter with its average of about -14C. Wind speed (at 50 metres) is lower than in S' but apparently 'good enough'. There is an extremely large windfarm south of the city in the desert with modern MW+ class machines. Shows nicely on Google maps. / Wikimapia Gaisma data: Entries are January to December URUMQI: http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/urumqi.html Variable I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII Insolation, kWh/m=B2/day 1.84 2.84 3.96 4.94 5.90 6.08 5.63 5.09 4.26 3.07 1.96 1.49 Clearness, 0 - 1 0.53 0.57 0.56 0.53 0.54 0.53 0.50 0.52 0.54 0.54 0.50 0.49 Temperature, =B0C -17.04 -14.43 -5.06 7.46 16.15 21.56 23.94 22.38 15.50 5.68 -4.40 -13.27 Wind speed, m/s 5.09 4.76 4.67 5.03 4.90 4.78 4.89 4.67 4.66 4.82 5.15 5.19 Precipitation, mm 8 8 18 30 31 35 26 20 23 22 16 11 Wet days, d 8.0 6.2 6.8 6.0 5.3 6.8 7.5 5.8 5.0 4.4 6.2 8.0 Saskatchewan http://www.gaisma.com/en/location/swift-current.html Variable I II III IV V VI VII VIII IX X XI XII Insolation, kWh/m=B2/day 1.18 2.01 3.18 4.58 5.29 5.63 6.04 4.97 3.53 2.28 1.32 0.95 Clearness, 0 - 1 0.48 0.51 0.51 0.53 0.50 0.49 0.55 0.53 0.49 0.48 0.46 0.46 Temperature, =B0C -13.70 -11.11 -5.01 4.77 12.13 16.85 19.46 18.89 11.96 4.35 -5.21 -11.65 Wind speed, m/s 7.59 7.31 7.16 7.30 7.30 6.92 6.03 6.03 6.65 7.16 7.03 7.59 Precipitation, mm 17 14 18 23 42 67 46 37 32 16 13 17 Wet days, d 10.4 8.0 7.6 7.2 9.1 11.7 8.7 7.8 7.6 5.6 6.6 9.6 Back to work ...
