It's "Communications Device Class", a composite device like a modem. It's sort of a one-size-fits-all name for a grouping of functions that by themselves may be generic(but not neccessarily) but as a group are nonstandard. If you search for "USB CDC" it should point you to the spec and other documents. The FTDI chips can run either as virtual com ports or as CDC's so you can reach the extra registers(and do more bitrates).
