I think the most gains are in the pic16(14 bit core). And MPLAB-C is what most of the pic18 sample code is written for. There are also other vendors than HiTech, but not for every architecture. I think HiTech(maybe IAR) are the only one with compilers for the whole line. But each is sold separately. And there are free compilers, too, but it depends which parts.
