People in the open source software (e.g. Linux, Open Office, etc.) often speak
of two different meanings of the word 'free'.

Free as in "free beer" means that you don't have to pay money for something. 
Free as in "free speech" means that you have the freedom to see and modify code
without restriction.  Some people focus on the first kind of 'free' but the
second one may be much more important.

I hope this explains the comment about free beer.
