I can't speak with experience about the C18 compiler, but the C30 compiler is a dandy compiler, even the free version. After an evaluation period, SOME optimizations are turned off, but most of the time they are barely noticeable to the hobbyist anyway. Even unoptimized code generated by the C30 compiler is far better than the code emitted by any of the 8 bit compilers I've looked at (and I've looked at a lot).
