Take a look on the free Serial Port Monitor from www.sysinternals.com, based
on your description I am unsure this is exactly what you are looking for but
certainly worth a try.

As for a device, I doubt any serial real analysis can be done without a
physical Logic Analyzer, so you may want to invest in one of the many that
can parse RS232 protocol.
