I would second that suggestion. The other advantage of the 886 is that it
has Mchip's nanowatt system. So you can run using just the onboard
oscillator and you can use MCLR as a free input pin if you need it.

I have a 16F887 floating around in my pile somewhere. I finally figured out
that the picprg software I was using failed on it because of a string
comparison (stopping at the 16F88 instead of realizing that 16F887 was
longer, DOH!). So when I get a minute, I'll update and retest.
